Lena St. Claires mother, Ying-ying, married a white bit of affairs and brought her from China to America. Because of a language barrier among Ying-ying and her maintainhe spoke English and she spoke Chineseher ethnical identity remained unchanged throughout their marriage. When Ying-ying is forced to delay at Lena and Harolds house, she immediately sees what she believes are flaws in their house. Lena hates the f spiel that Ying-ying is unceasingly aware of these small imperfections. Furthermore, Lena is critical o f Ying-ying for utter her opinion on these imperfections in order to get her way. A wobbly remand that Harold do is in the guest room. On top is a round vase. When Ying-ying puts her purse on top, it is in clear danger of toppling over. A short time later, Lena hears a crash, and upon investigating, discovers the broken vase at her mothers feet.
